Michele Aboud - advertising & fashion photographer

Michele spoke of several photo shoots and the way she goes about approaching her creativity.

Embelish: sets out a pallet of colour, texture, design, composition
This is creative & visual art.
eg1 stadium shot of Robby Dean - 2 shots 1st of him sitting in stadium in good light -4pm twilight; 2 extra lights.
Later shot stadium when light was good for it. Did a composite.

Her philosophy:
speak to clients
relax subject ('talent')
calm relaxed
prepare well
think about the shot & what is needed

Michele does a lot of editorial work - for this she is not well paid but it is good for her reputation.

How to start a business by Lindi Holly

How to start a business by Lindi Holly

Her background:
architecture; then long-shot photography of triathletes; B&W; Colour photography; weddings; & so on; formed a company with husband.

Recently started a new business on her own. Her advice:
Keep the name of business simple - eg your own name. (she does weddings, corporate, portraits mainly; also music school - boutique upmarket stuff)
Make a simple website with gallery - can buy a template for this. Can also be a blog.
Ues these photos for marketing & blog.
Get to know clients - good as they may come back.

Weddings:
Does a wedding album - that's where the money is. charges $4,500 book (used to charge $1000 for full set of prints)
Good idea to charge $250 up front to make them commit. Also good idea to get them into studio as more likely to order.
Prints on archival paper - cotton. Hand made book.

How many photos to show client: Hilary: 100 images/hour of shooting but max 500. Lindi gives more .
Portrait: shoots 1-3 hours

Mentioned 'pro select ' software - selling tool timesexposion.com.au(???)

Album co: Selex $1600 for 20 images
Pixel perfect: use for normal printing. - $1 per print
'The Edge' - printing place in vic

Hilary: CD charges: $4,500 for 30 prints hi res
Lindi-Charges $70 for a 5x7 - not much more for 8x10

Then Lindi went through a long checklist for setting up a business such as:

What u need:
ABN- ato.gov.au/
GST reg? (have to if earling >$75,000)
Business name rego (www.ors.act.gov.au)
business bank a/c
contact info: phone no, email, postal address
If partnership - agreement of how to split up .
Reg business - dont have to if just your name
Domain name - web hosting
website blog, facebook?, twitter?
Branding your style; your uniqueness, logo, business cards, brochures

Portfolio preservation (eg album; CD; portfolio case;

Then she went into more detail about equipment; liability; office or studio; marketing.

She showed us lots of her photos.
